It’s up to you to sign the Petition to Stop the Discovery Channel from running this bat crap’s “I love Alaska” TV series — yeah, resigned Gov. Palin puts $150 bounty on wolves, and there’s not a mine she doesn’t love.
I think that it is unlikely that the “cult of personality” will ever stop being a major force. People respond to, and give power to, these public figures because the public figures are giving voice to something that connects to the masses. We look out into the world, and we see or hear something that mirrors something that is important to us. Then we give power to those public figures.
I find what Sara Palin expresses to be pretty appalling, so I don’t connect at all to her, and can’t understand how people can, until I realize that she is giving voice to what they feel, or she seems to be. The trouble is, it is so easy for people to be manipulated once they start to follow a public figure. That is because very few people actually think independently, and so superficial slogans and comments are accepted uncritically.
I love Barak Obama, and just about everything he stands for. So, am I caught up in the cult of personality? To the extent that I don’t exercise critical independent thinking, I guess that I am. Interestingly, commentators on the right think that people like me are carried away by a cult of personality surrounding Obama. I don’t see it that way. I just happen to see the world the way he does, he expresses values that connect to mine. Is it the same for Palin’s supporters – I suspect that to an extent it is.
So what is my point? Just that there will always be public figures who stand as a type of surrogate for the masses, on both the left and right. A problem in our current culture is that the tools of the various types of electronic media are so pervasive and powerful, and often so narrow, biased and targeted, that it is easier to manipulate people and the public discourse. Though, of course, that same media can serve as a counter to manipulation.
So Mariah can start a blog, and to the extent that she speaks to what people care about, the power of that blog grows, and morphs into other things, and now there is a progressive voice in the market.
It is somewhat discouraging at times, because the level of discourse seems to be getting lower and lower overall. But, I have hope that there will be voices that form points of cultural light if you will, and people will coalesce around that, and that will pull the culture back towards more integrity. Because in spite of the law of entropy, which operates only within certain parameters, I think that the structure of reality supports integrity, and movement towards fundamental qualities of virtue. You offer one of those points of cultural light, so thank you.
Ultimately, it is a matter of consciousness. All this political and social chatter reflects a certain collective level of consciousness. That is the base, the cause, the ground of this whole thing. We need to all lift our own level of consciousness, and support those around us to do the same.
“It is somewhat discouraging at times, because the level of discourse seems to be getting lower and lower overall.”
Probably because civil discourse requires some shared understandings, some common ground, and as discussion continues people on both sides realize there isn’t any. The two poles of opinion embody fundamentally different understandings of the structure of society and the relationships between its members. Those viewpoints are not reconcilable.
For the last few years I thought Matt Shea was batshit crazy; turns out, he’s just representing his district. Good for them?
Wow. disturbing
Hmmm, could be they have so many in stock they’re trying to use the power of suggestion. Unable…to…resist…buying…one…for…Mariah.
When you open it up it is full of Italian War Victory stories.

That’s great! I just knew it wasn’t Howard Zinn or Salman Rushdie.
I think I saw the same display at the Spokane Valley Barnes & Nobel – if it was in the Biography section.
On the row above it was Ted Kennedy’s Bio – so I thought – ok, to each their own. Still, it is depressing seeing Sarah Palin.
Yeah! A friend!

Keep up your good work.
Some insightful points there, Roger.

Mariah:
You certainly know how to beat the drums to make the progressive sheep bleat….
Palin bad; Obama good;
