Green Bluff Awesome

Fall brings the smell of wood smoke and frosted pine needles to the Inland Northwest. This signals its time to make the 15 minute pilgrimage out to Green Bluff to enjoy the best of fall before temperatures drop and snow begins to blanket the area. One thing Spovangelist loves about the Apple and Harvest Festivals is they transcend the mania of modern holiday consumerism. Instead they promote agricultural tourism that builds awareness of local farmers and the changing availability of produce throughout the year.

Its interesting that the slick marketing of the Green Bluff Grower’s Association results from the collective interests of independent growers rather than a committee charged with driving traffic to the area.

Green Bluff is to Spokane what Sauvie’s Island is to Portland. While lacking in sandy beaches the Emerald of Spokane has plenty of other enviable assets. In addition to proximity to Mt. Spokane and heartwarming brand identity is the impressive density of small farm establishments on the Green Bluff loops.

Spovangelist’s three favorite Green Bluff stops:

  1. Walter’s Fruit Ranch (#4) – For the sheer nostalgia of elemetary school field trips and tractor rides with Farmer Walter.
  2. The Barn on Trezzi Farm (#33) – For their locally grown ready made meals and recycled rooster statue art.
  3. Cole’s Family Orchard (#15) – Because they’re Green Bluff’s only all-organic growers.

  1. Don’t forget Knapps! Where from Aug-Oct. (unless frost hits, like this year!) you can pick you own pumpkin, raspberries and blackberries and watch the infamous pumpkin cannon. Great for the whole family!
