Local Artists for a Local Food Co-op

August 17th, 2009 by The Spovangelist

We are all charged up about local foods after attending a Spokane Farmer’s Market fundraising event and watching Food, Inc. at the re-opened Magic Lantern Theater last week.

Part of the Spovangelist’s thesis is that problems in the social realm are more difficult to identify and discuss than those observed in physical reality. While we need to meet our physical needs first to survive, mental health and social environment are becoming increasingly important in our information-driven global economy. Imagine if the argument for local foods was adapted to the value of local entertainment. What would the statistics and research look like for a movie called “Culture, Inc.”?

While the impacts of homogenized culture are difficult to measure and we may therefore not get to watch such a documentary in our lifetime, the membership and leadership of the Main Market Co-op clearly get it. This Thursday you are invited to attend “Local Artists for a Local Food Co-op” at the Fox.

Renowned local author Jess Walter will read selections from his work. We hope he’ll include some gritty descriptions of Spokane circa the 1980’s from his book Citizen Vince – we’ve come a long way, baby!

When people say Brad Greene is a piano virtuoso they aren’t kidding. We witnessed Greene spellbinding a room full of chatty young professionals one night on his grand piano in the White Room on Pacific.

Then there is Cheryl-Anne Millsap, most often known for her editorship at Spokane Metro Magazine and her ability to light up a party. But did anyone read her creative short about the woodcarver last winter? It was SO gripping and SO Spokane in a way that is difficult for even natives to describe.

This event will broaden Kaylee Cole’s fawning local audience, and while we have no idea what AMB is they are bound to please judging by the company they keep.

Now think about the cost of dinner out on the town and go purchase your ticket(s) to a rollicking good time.

Many of us have been discussing Culture, Inc. for decades. Good Idea to put a name on it and I believe the movie will be made within ten years.

(Just go to the parking garage under AMC and see all of the gray cars, j/k!)

on you bit about counter culture and consumer culture, I think it was the reunited Sex Pistols on a nostalgia tour who made the point: If you fight the establishment long enough, they get back at you by making you part of it.

I’m confused about the Main Market. Don’t we already have a terrific and affordable source for local food in Fresh Abundance?
