Rock the Boat, Dock the Dock

This morning, an article appeared in the Spokesman about the plan to build 30 docks on the river, and the response in form of a protest. Why would docks need to be fought against? One, big reason: redband trout. The construction of these docks would threaten their habitat and spawning area.

The protest in question is being launched by the Spokane Riverkeeper, an organization devoted to the protection and preservation of the Spokane river. The term ‘riverkeeper’ denotes a worldwide program with waterkeepers in Russia, the U.K., and Senegal, in addition to dozens scattered across the U.S.

What’s coolest about this occasion is that it’s going to be on the water. “If it floats, you’re ready,” the Facebook event page states. “Rafts, pontoon and drift boats, tubes, kayaks, canoes, etc. welcome. Professional outfitters will be there to help with safety.”

This is going down on Sunday, beginning at noon and ending at two. The starting point will be Plantes Ferry, with takeout at the Centennial Trail footbridge.
