I am a transplant from NW Oregon--born in Portland and lived most of my life on Mt. Hood--about 1.5 years ago. I have never lived anywhere else. My husband took a job with Deaconess so I left my teaching career once I got our house sold. I taught elementary school, owned a retail/wholesale coffee business for ten years, worked as a district tutor with challenging students K-12th, taught summer school, worked as a behavior coach for K-6th, taught SLBC kindergarten, ran and hiked tons of trails, did half marathons, did two Portland Marathons, did a Portland to Coast speed walking team--all women, did another 24 hour relay from Salem OR to Eugene OR, enjoyed cross country skiing, loved entertaining with my many circles of wonderful friends. Since moving here I have not been able to get a job and end up spending a great deal of time at home getting more depressed! It seems that I cannot find many people that I have much in common with. When I read an article in the Spokesman a while ago I thought it would be a good idea to check this out and maybe find some networking possibilities as well as some good friends to laugh and talk with. I look forward to hearing more about some of the events that are coming up so that I may participate and begin to develop a repoire with an area that I would love to love and get to know a lot better.

Saw your great story in this morning's Spokesman.

I'm in my 50's...but I would love to participate. Don't want to wear a red hat, as I'm young at heart! Is it too late for me?

One year later this organization has grown far beyond what I initially thought possible. While we have yet to do some of the volunteer activities I'd originally hoped for, the personal rewards of getting to know these wonderful people has been so sustaining.

Thanks to Megan for the shout out!

It's official.

The Shrinking Violets have blossomed onto the stage of Spokane's social scene. Monthly brunches, a book group and craft nights are some of the first activities that have taken root.
