Spokane Community Garden Tour
This has been a season for cycling city wide tours. After biking to four different locations on the Green + Solar Home Tour following Spokefest, I thought why not take the same route for the 3rd annual Spokane Community Garden Tour?

We started at the popular gardens in Browne’s Addition (where I spotted my first ghost pepper plant!) then worked our way over to West Central. From there we biked out to One World Community Garden on East Sprague, where we fueled up on some of Chef Andrew’s hearty potato soup, then went deep into the East Central Neighborhood, arriving just as they were wrapping up a bake sale. Nothing beats fresh baked zucchini bread this time of year!

While we weren’t able to get out to some of the gardens around SCC or out in the valley, we did get a decent amount of exercise and were given free organic produce by some enthusiastic gardeners. There were chickens on the tour, we saw lots of compost and permaculture practices in action, and we were reminded of the need for adopting a Complete Streets decision-making framework in Spokane.

One of the most interesting things about the tour was how new to gardening many of the hosts were. They didn’t pretend to be experts, they admitted they were mostly in it to have fun, grow tasty food and experiment. Many of the gardens have undergone huge expansions recently, some even doubling their bed space since last year. Some think community gardening is a fad that will fade with the economic recovery. I think it is an American pastime that is here to stay.
