You may have caught wind of a developing project called Sustainable September. Along with a growing cadre of partners, Spokane’s Community-Minded Enterprises has catalyzed planning for a whole month of sustainability-related education events this September.

The purpose of the event is to increase awareness and foster relationships that will lead to a more environmentally and economically resilient Spokane.
You can visit the Sustainable September Facebook group here.
We’ll leave it to the wonks to talk up the month’s inaugural kick-off event, guest speakers, and info sessions that will take place as part of the festivities. Where Bioneers is an intense weekend conference highlighting the inspiring work of world leaders in the sustainability and social justice movements, Sustainable September is a showcase of locally available goods and services and a time to make new connections and celebrate sustainable interest in the community at large.

A less known component is Sustainable Uprising, a one night sustainability-themed cultural blowout that will extend the activities of the annual East End Street Festival well into the evening. Spearheaded by the Community Building, last year’s street festival included an outdoor music concert, ping pong tournaments, BBQ and live broadcasting provided by KYRS.
Now add to that design, film and music competitions, a sustainability documentary by Black Swan Productions, hands on activities like “statistics paintings” (materials provided) and workshops by Fresh Abundance and Twin Peaks wilderness academy, and you’ve got yourself a party!

The early efforts of young staffers at CME like Gabriel Brown and Taylor Weech have created a variety of opportunities for involvement. We think of it like a Terrain for the environment. (NOTE: The weekend after Sustainable Uprising is International PARK(ing) Day.)

Thanks for letting people know about the Main Street Fair and the Sustainable Uprising.
I would like to let people know about a peaceful protest happening downtown on this Thursday (tomorrow!).
Would you be willing to post the information?
Please email me for more information.
Thanks
Dear Spovangelist,
Your running commentary makes me proud of my hometown. Keep up the great work. Too bad Seattle isn’t as rad as the ‘Can.
Save the Date Spovangelists! The luncheon launch/celebration for Sustainable September Spokane will be held on September 1st, 2009 at The Lincoln Center at 11:30 AM.
Catering by local sustainable foodies, Sante! Baby trees to give! (I just realized how much I love saying “luncheon launch.”)
No charge to attend, but reservations required. Look for details and invitations in the next month.
