Last week I sat in on a LaunchPad Social Media panel with Chris Pirillo at the Crosby Theater. Between Bill’s cheeky sense of humor and Chris’s propensity to shock and opine, the audience went home thoroughly edutained at the end of the night. Photo by Mark Anthony I knew I had a unique perspective on [...]

Variations on a Mule

There is a new bar on 2nd and Cedar called the Kick Ass Saloon. Apparently the owners thought it too offensive to display the word “Ass” on their signage, so a Ren and Stimpy style donkey with obscenely large testicles takes its place. Make of it what you will.

Rewild or Die
May 17th, 2010 10 Comments
Rewild what? Rewilding is the pursuit and maintenance of a sustainable way of life through hunter-gatherer social and economic systems. Basically, rediscovering the skills humans used to survive before industrialization. Portland’s infamous Urban Scout will be sharing his first book entitled Rewild or Die at a skill-share camp this week right here in Spokane. Scout’s [...]

Tea Party Fever Pitch
April 17th, 2010 33 Comments
It was a beautiful day for a Tea Party in Spokane. There I was, sitting on the sunny steps of the Spokane Convention Center, listening as my friend John Waite (who lost in the primary race for City Council against Nancy McLaughlin last year) got booed for asking the crowd to consider third party candidates. [...]

P-Jammers Represent!
April 5th, 2010 3 Comments
Spokane’s own “loudest and proudest” will be representing our city at the third annual Honk! Fest West in Seattle this weekend. Honk! Fest is a wild and bacchanalian conference of alternative marching bands that get together to watch each other perform, trade tricks and tips on how to be the best bands they can be, [...]

Haters?!

What, pray tell, have I done to warrant this? While it might be considered flattering to receive such scrutiny from our friends in the valley, what is the point of such a petty accusation? To get me to write more frequently on an ongoing basis? If there is one thing SVI thrives on it is [...]

Chicken Sh@#: The Party!
January 28th, 2010 5 Comments
They say an effective communication technique is to “tell ‘em what you’re gonna tell ‘em, tell ‘em, and then tell ‘em what you told ‘em.” That is what I appreciate about Gabriel and Rimas’s proactive three-pronged approach to marketing Chicken Sh@#: Exploring Urban Ecosystems. Instead of issuing a wan invitation to an opening night event [...]

Chicken Sh@#

It is no secret that I’m a huge fan of local artist Gabriel Brown. Gabriel is part of a growing handful of young locals (without university employment or a large commercial following) who shows his work outside the greater Spokane area. Most recently his Great Tasting Goodness exhibit was displayed at the Mt. Hood Visual [...]

Trick or Vote Haunts Spokane
October 29th, 2009 4 Comments
This year Trick or Vote went down in Spokane and enjoyed a respectable showing for such an unconventional first time event. Despite the descriptive title, most people’s first reaction is “Trick or what?” The idea of adding political engagement into a holiday festivity is just not intuitive for most. Once people grasp the novelty and [...]

Buzzin Clubbin O.M.G.

Awhile back we explored some emerging directions in Spokane’s club scene. Last night, at Vintage Hill in Spokane’s SoDo District, we met an interesting character dubbed the “Commander-In-Flirt” of SpokaneFlirts.com. As he described the services available through his agency, I was watched closely for any hint of reaction or understanding. After all, in such an [...]
